In order to investigate a murder in 15th-century China, Tang Fan, a sharp-witted senior government official, takes time off from his regular duties. He teams up with guardsman Sui Zhou, a martial arts expert, to try and solve the case. The two look into the death of Tang Fan's landlord, a peaceful man who lives in the house she rents. Even though it appears to be a suicide, the investigative team soon notices that something doesn't seem right. After much searching, they are able to identify a suspect they think may have killed the landlord. However, they quickly discover that this murderer is only a minor participant in a much larger plot and did not act alone. The two quickly discover that something very sinister is going on as they investigate the crime further.
